When it comes to the city of Houston, there are tons of restaurants with new ones popping up every day. You could eat at a different restaurant every single day for breakfast, lunch and dinner and not run out of new places to dine for quite a while. The restaurants where Houston eats that we are going to talk about today are a whole different matter. These restaurants might not be on your radar and should be. Some you may have heard of or haven’t been to in a while, but either way, we are going to be telling you about some restaurants that are oldies but goodies that serve great grub in Houston today!
What Makes an Oldie But Goodie Restaurant?
There are several factors that make a Houston restaurant an oldie but a goodie and a must to put on your rotation and lists of places to go.
- Ambiance – When you walk into a restaurant that has been around for years, the ambiance feels like it has been around for years. No metal and stone with open kitchen concepts. These aren’t shiny and new. They are comfortable, like your Grandparents house in the country, and you will feel like you are at home.
- Waitstaff – You won’t find young waitstaff at most of these Houston eats spots, but women and men who have been there for as long as the building. They know the building and most of the patrons by name and take a little bit of time to hear their stories because they are amazing and add to the experience.
- Years in Business – These oldies but goodies aren’t fly by night and have been around for 40 to 60 years. Some have changed locations once or twice, but they are still here for a reason; loyal customers and good food.
- Home Cooking – We aren’t all home cooks, and we don’t all have time to cook at home, but most of the Houston eats that have been around offer meals that are as close to home cooking as you can get, and the food will not disappoint.
10 Houston Eats That Are Oldies But Goodies
If you love fried chicken, then you have to visit Barbecue Inn. This restaurant, which has been around for nearly 70 years is located in the Heights area, and there are several things that make it unique. First, don’t be fooled by the name. Yes, they do serve barbecue, but they are famous for their friend chicken, which is made to order and is delicious, so when you place that order, be prepared to wait for it. Second, there is sometimes a line to get in to be seated, but it well worth the wait. Third, the pies for desert are fantastic, so save room. And, finally, the waitstaff is wonderful.
Want the best pizza in town? Go and visit Doyle’s, but be aware they aren’t open on the weekends! Doyle’s has been around for 60 years and is located on W. 34th Street. Lots of parking for this eatery and there is a take-out window that situated on the outside of the building, but when you walk inside, you are surrounded by yummy smells of marinara, melted cheese and good old-fashioned cooking. Bring your appetite, because the servings aren’t small.
If you are a native Houstonian, you have experienced the Houston eats at El Patio and indeed the margarita’s at Club No Minors. Not only is the tex mex delicious and just enough to satisfy those cravings you will have, one margarita will be enough to have to call an Uber to drive you home. Go back in time and take a visit to Club No Minors, order some queso and have some tacos with that ‘rita with salt.
Houston Eats barbecue at Pizzitola’s, which has been around for 70 years is one of the best that Houston has. This isn’t barbecue, this is BBQ, and it is Texas style, which means it is cooked over an open pit that is fired with pits, fired with East Texas hickory to give it a distinctive flavor. Avalon Diner is a standby when it comes to where Houston eats, just stop by on a Sunday morning and look at the people waiting in line for a table. The biscuits are out of this world, and the hamburgers are delicious. Slide into a booth, order a shake and take a step back in time to the 1950’s.
Cleburne Cafeteria has been a cafeteria that Houston eats at since 1941. Granted, when you think cafeteria, great images don’t always come to mind, but Cleburne will change all of that. Between the down home daily specials, the vast array of entrees and salads and sides, all made fresh daily, you might fill up, but be sure to leave room for dessert, because they do that the best pies and a huge selection every day. And, if you want to grab up your Holiday meals from them, they can cook it all for you, and it will taste like you made it yourself from scratch!
An East End eatery since 1953, Dinner Bell Cafeteria is another cafeteria that will change your mind about cafeteria food. From Chicken and Dumplings to Meatloaf, everything is made from scratch and is delicious. The prices are reasonable, and this cafeteria is a great place where Houston eats to grab a quick lunch or dinner or pastry from the bakery.
Head to LaPorte for this fantastic seafood place. Monument Inn has been through a LOT. From fires to floods, but it hasn’t stopped the crowds from flocking there because they serve about 80,000 pounds of shrimp and almost 25,000 pounds of catfish, crawfish and fresh fish every year. Located on the Houston Ship Channel, bring your appetite, because the menu and the portions are nice and large, and the food is delicious.
Antone’s has morphed over the past 50 years, but you can still get the best po’boys in town there. Eat in or take out, these are a Houston eats staple. Be sure to try a cookie, they are so good, and if you pop them in the microwave for a few seconds when you get home, they are truly delicious!!
On Richmond, you might find it hard to park at Nielsen’s Deli anytime around lunch, which isn’t surprising. This is a place that Houston eats at because the sandwiches are big, the box lunches are plentiful, the deviled eggs are overflowing with stuffing, the sides are delicious, and even the bags of chips are oversized. Nielsen’s has been around for about 50 years and when you get there, be prepared to stand in line and place your order at the deli counter and then pay. It’s a small space with a few seats, so don’t plan on eating there, but it is well worth what you will walk out the door with tucked in your white bag.
