The fashion designers that live in Houston have so much talent. Annie Chyr is one of those fashion designers who designs with the premise that women were created to be bold and her latest collection, DISSOCIATE, proves that.
From Singapore to Houston
Born in Singapore, Annie has lived in California, San Francisco, and Denver until she settled in Houston in 2004. Singapore is where Annie spent the majority of her childhood and what she calls home. Did you know that Singapore is known to be a gateway to South East Asia? Annie Chyr proves that with her designs, which are full of diversity and different cultures which she fuses and combines to make beautiful works of art that showcase how bold you are.
I feel as a generation we need to embrace and learn about each other’s cultures, and that is not depicted in mainstream media.
Annie Chyr (pronounced Cheer) grew up around sewing and fashion. Her grandmother was the seamstress and dressmaker for Singapore’s Prime Minister, Lee Kuan Yeu.
I come from a very traditional family and like every typical Chinese parent would say; go be a doctor, engineer, lawyer. Arts won’t make money. And while all my cousins from my dad side are med and technology majors I’m the black sheep. She was the one that really supported my visions.
I would sit and watch my grandmother tailor and make customer suits, and she would make his custom suits. My love for fashion is inspired by her style. To this day she’s always so classy and hip at 86 years old. She’s rocking the 70’s shades and denim jackets. I love her; she’s such a fun grandma to be around!
Mentors and Inspirations
Throughout her fashion career, Annie has had the pleasure of interning with some of the best designers in the fashion industry in Houston. At the age of 16 when most kids are deciding what to wear to prom, Annie was learning from Danny Nguyen Couture. Danny Nguyen is a world renowned fashion design in Houston. Viet Nguyen also played a huge part in her fashion career. Viet Nguyen is a pattern maker and does production for local designers in Houston. He also taught at Houston Community College teaching men’s tailoring.
These two designer are the biggest influences in her life so far. Danny Nguyen taught me all of the marketing aspects of fashion as a business and draping techniques. Viet Nguyen is known for his pattern drafting skill and precision and taught some his tricks to me.
Annie believes inspirations can come from anything but for her precisely is culture and architectures.
Don’t DISSOCIATE From Fashion
Houston Community College taught Annie the industry standards and how to build a whole capsule collection.
I wanted to be an architect at first but then experienced it first hand and changed my mind. I love experimenting with different silhouettes and textures with my designs. Also, you can tell a lot by one’s culture when it comes to fashion. I want to convey different cultures and diversity into my designs.
Annie Chyr’s latest collection that she is releasing is called DISSOCIATE. It is modeled from a mental disorder called dissociative amnesia which she learned about while attending a psychology class at Houston Community College.
When someone becomes diagnosed with this disorder, they forget who they are and create their own reality. DISSOCIATE shows a sense of isolation and escapism that symbolizes the mind-state of an asylum capturing the essence of escaping to “another reality”.
Chyr experimented with many different textile designs and abstract silhouettes in DISSOCIATE, which provides a sense of comfort and versatility to the garments. The inkblot designs of Chyr’s designs are all custom hand dyed and each has its own unique pattern.
Chyne explains that DISSOCIATE is a story of a girl isolated in an asylum and mentally delusional. She escapes to another reality in her own mind while looking into herself in the mirror. She is with the innocent self in her subconscious; that she once was. It takes back into reality where she is with the nurse force feeding her with medication. With the capsules trying to isolate her mind she retaliates, thus transitioning her into an angrier, darker state of mind. There she has the poise, power that she wishes but it is all just a state of mind.
Not only is Annie an amazing fashion designer, but she also uses her creative side to design logos and graphics. She was able to take all the ideas I had rolling around in my head and design a logo for my handbag collection.
Like that for me was self-taught. I never took a class just read books and online references and theory.
She is one of many designers featured at this year’s Runway Houston event, September 29, and I suggest you head to her website and check out her collection.
