It’s tough being a girl. But, Girls Inc. is setting out to change the way that girls think of themselves and by teaching girls how to be strong, smart and bold. That’s not all they are teaching them, because, on April 14, Girls Inc. is celebrating Frolic on the Green at Discovery Green and showing how they are teaching girls how to build a dream. At the same time, Girls Inc. will be celebrating their 20th Anniversary of empowering girls.
Girls Inc. was founded in 1864 in Waterbury, Connecticut. They provided programs not only for young working women but also for younger daughters of mill families who had no place to gather but in the city streets. Today Girls Inc. provides more than 140,000 girls across the U.S. and Canada with life-changing experiences and solutions to the unique challenges of being a girl. Girls Inc. offers girls an environment and programming that, together, empower them to succeed.
Girls Inc. believes that all girls are capable of achieving their full potential if the social, cultural and legal barriers to their full potential are recognized and addressed, and they offer programming and activities that are challenging and encouraging. These programs are designed to empower girls and young women ages 6 to 18 by enabling them to learn new information, acquire and develop skills, build self-confidence and have fun. Girls Inc. programs are hands-on, age-appropriate, and girl-focused.
In Houston, Girls Inc. offers year-round outreach programs in partnership with schools and community organizations. Some of these include everything from Spring Break Camps to Summer Day Camps. They also offer classes where they teach girls leadership, how to handle money and finances, health and wellness, how to deal with peer pressure and bullying, how to prevent teen pregnancy, STEM-based programs, and how to be safe in all environments. But, most importantly, Girls Inc. develops a girls’ capacity to be self-sufficient, responsible members of the community where they live.
Frolic On The Green
For months, teen members of Girls Inc., have partnered with some of Houston’s top architectural firms to create 10 of the most outstanding, creative, and structurally sound playhouses you will ever see. The girls took a hands-on approach to every step of the process from brainstorming to drafting, to construction. The result is Frolic On The Green, a fully functional play experience for kids and adults which combine the limitless imagination of girls with the real life applications of an STEM-focused education.
Frolic On The Green, which opens on April 14 in Discovery Green from 6 – 8 pm and will be on display until April 24 for the entire city to explore and enjoy, isn’t just about teaching the girls a few skills. Girls Inc. teamed up with numerous architectural firms, including Gilbane Building Company, Heights Venture Architects, LLP, Fluor, GSMA, Garcia Design Associates and Dillon Kyle Architects, who have taken a hands-on approach with the girls to help them draft, design and build their structures. This collaborative effort will not only result in a display of innovation and art, but it underlines the message of Girls Inc., which is to create strong female leaders.
The opening of Frolic On The Green is an adults-only event, and Mary Benton will serve as Mistress of Ceremonies, and former Mayor Annise Parker is Honorary Chair. There will be food, Houston’s top leaders speaking and you can even bid on the playhouses to have them in your backyards. All the proceeds from this event will benefit Girls Inc. and it is sure to be a fun time to #froliconthegreen and support our girls at the same time.
By having our girls build a play home, it not only exposes them to new careers but allows them to fully heighten their potential by getting their hands dirty and working together to solve problems. This event continues Girls Inc.’s mission of the past twenty years, of promoting female enrichment, career exploration, and mentorship. -Rita Kirkland Girls Inc. CEO.
Purchase tickets here for the opening night festivities, but if you can’t make it, be sure to frolic over to Discovery Green to check out these amazing playhouses through April 24.
We hope to see you all there to celebrate the 20th year of Girls Inc. being Strong, Smart, and Bold in Houston!
