It had finally arrived, it was finally here!
Houston children’s author, Lauri Rosen has just released the second book in her Pixie & Trixie Bug series, and this time they are having a Birthday Surprise, but these books are so much more than fabulous illustrations and darling characters with great rhymes. The imagination and talent that Lauri Rosen has shown with her books will touch not only children but adults as they delve into the fabulous and fun filled world of twins Pixie & Trixie Bug.
Pixie & Trixie Bug
Pixie & Trixie Bug are twin bugs that live in Rollingbrook way. There are eight books in the Pixie & Trixie Bug series and Pixie & Trixie Bug Birthday Surprise is the 2nd book to be published. The first book introduces the characters and the town where they live. What you notice about these books is that the illustrations, by Bill Megenhardt, are spectacular, and the characters feel like they want to jump off the page. Pixie & Trixie Bug are loosely based on Lauri and her friend Leslie. In fact, each of the characters in the books is based on people that are in the real life of Houston children’s author, Lauri Rosen. The frogs are her parents, the grasshopper is her younger son, the worm is her older son and then she has various friends and family members interspersed throughout the book as well. But, that’s not what makes these books so special.
What makes these books so wonderful is that they not only tell a relevant story that a child can relate to, but many of the bugs have special needs. Willy, the walking stick, zooms around in his wheelchair, and Freddy Frog has dyslexia. Delilah wears glasses and Daphne the Doodlebug doesn’t like loud noises or bright lights and Sidney the slug is a bit slow, and Laurie wanted to be sure that there was a lesson learned from all these bugs living happily as friends.
I wanted to show kids that you don’t have to have a label, like disability or special needs or different, and that you can still have normal friendships and that even though you may be different, everyone is still the same. The books focus on the unconditional love, friendship, giving, acceptance and embracing each others differences. It teaches kids that it doesn’t matter when it comes to friendship and that kids are just kids.
Houston Children’s Author – Lauri Rosen
Houston Children’s Author Lauri Rosen has always loved books, writing and kids. Her passion turned into a business when she realized while searching for a hard to find book for her young son, which she couldn’t be the only person who couldn’t find what she was looking for. And, then one day while she was on vacation in Canada, she walked into a bookstore, and it all came together. As soon as got back to Houston, Lauri looked for a space and opened Children’s Chapters, which specialized in hard to find books for kids, especially those that dealt with things like divorce, death, disabilities, twins, new babies, moving and other books that parents were looking for to explain those life changing moments that are so hard to explain to a child.
Lauri ran her store differently. She read every book first before she allowed it on her floor and she was an expert in finding the books that people were asking for. She believed in customer service, and her customers loved her. While she was running Children’s Chapters, Lauri was always rhyming in her head or while she was running errands and writing down the rhymes. One day, she sat down with all her scraps of paper and put the rhymes together to make her first book, Pixie & Trixie Bug.
But, Lauri sat on the book as she wrote seven more in her series and moved Children’s Chapters from a brick and mortar business to an online store that specialized in books for special needs groups. She had waited four years before she took the plunge to become a Houston children’s author, but in 2008, she published Pixie & Trixie Bug with much success. The second book, which she just released, focuses on the Houston flooding that recently happened and how a family lost everything and had to move because of it. All the bugs band together and help out the bugs family and give him a big send-off. It’s about friendship and giving and how a community can come together in a time of need.
Lauri Rosen understands this, as she was instrumental in helping out during the Houston floods this past year. Whether it was hauling furniture or delivering toys and books, Lauri was there with a smile and a helping hand, because that is the type of person she is. In fact, these books are a true reflection of her spirit and her generosity. We asked this Houston children’s author where these books came from, and she said quite simply
They come from me.
After meeting with Houston children’s author, Lauri Rosen we have to agree, that, yes, they do. And, they also give a message of following your dreams and never giving up, because anything and everything is possible if you want it.
