Have you ever received a blessing? When you meet our #MarvelousMavens you will receive blessings each and every time, because they. are. marvelous. mavens. What does this mean? It means they can leap the highest building with a single bound and they can fly like a bird or a plane. It means they have stories to tell and tears to shed and time to give. It means they love as hard as they work. They are professional mavens who give their time and energy to causes and people big and small. They are elderly mavens who have lived lives that are meant to be revered. They are mavens raising kids and villages and doing such good deeds that it restores your faith in humanity. J-Vibe is going to be bringing you such #MarvelousMavens, because we believe in celebrating those in our Houston Jewish Community that make us all strive to become and be better humans.
#MarvelousMavens – Marcy Kurtz
Every so often you get to meet someone who is as beautiful on the inside as they are on the outside. They are humble, smart, quick witted, strong, brave and daring. We are talking about Marcy Kurtz. It seems as if this woman can do it all, and does it all. For starters, she is truly beautiful on the outside and on the inside. She is slender as a reed and has a way about her that calms you and at the same time draws you in and keeps you enthralled. She talks with her hands and she wears these large rings and bangly bracelets that make her appear exotic. Her manners and mannerisms are impeccable and she puts you at ease immediately.
This could be because she is a lawyer, a people person, a yoga teacher or just because she is fabulous. We vote for fabulous.
Have You Heard The Joke About The Attorney…
That joke isn’t about Marcy. Marcy graduated from University of Houston Law School, and after serving as a law clerk she joined the firm of Bracewell & Guiliani as a bankruptcy lawyer who also handles complex commercial and collection litigation cases in both state and federal courts. But, while she was busy advising banks and other lenders on creditors’ rights issues, she started to handle Pro Bono work for AIDS Foundation Houston. It started with wills and trusts, and this is when Marcy started to do things most attorney’s wouldn’t do at the time. She gave gay men the rights to leave their estates to their lovers in their legal wills, because she would draw them up for them when they were dying of AIDS.
Fast forward to today, and now Marcy heads up the Pro Bono department of every Bracewell & Guiliani office and her specialty is getting people out of jail that don’t have representation. Sometimes that means death row and sometimes that means a life sentence, but she puts any prejudices aside and gets the work done. How? Because she is an amazing soul who can see past the bad that is the present and imagine what the probable cause of the behavior was that led to where that person is today. It takes a very special person to be able to do that.
Good Works and Good Vibes
Marcy doesn’t just do good work with her Pro Bono work though, she has also started a non-profit organization called Peach Outreach, that raises funds to not only help research to find a cure for uterine and other gynecological cancers, but also helps the families that are going through treatment. She has worked hard on Peach Outreach and this non-profit has raised good money and helped many people, just like Marcy.
In her spare time, Marcy teaches yoga at Big Power Yoga, and even fits in some cross fit. We get exhausted and motivated by the power and strength and good vibes that Marcy Kurtz puts out into the Houston Jewish community every single day, we only hope that we can match it one day.
We love you, Marcy for all that you and for you who you are. Thank you for being a #MarvelousMaven!
