There are a few things that Sara Cline can’t live without. Her husband, her family, her dog and her craft. And, if you haven’t visited her online accessory store, MilanBlocks and checked out her designs, then you would realize you wouldn’t be able to live without her craft either.
Sara, who grew up in China, started creating clothing for her Barbie Dolls when she was six years old. She recalls that even back then when she had an idea, she would be up all night working on it until it was finished. In 2012, Sara moved to the States without knowing a single person.
Sara did not have a driver’s license when she moved to the states, so she felt her only option was to work from home, and she began to sell her goods on eBay. Her first sale, however, wasn’t something she had made, it was a pair of leather boots that were her husbands, but from that sale, she realized the potential of selling something that she had designed and handcrafted herself.
In 2012, Sara launched her first collection on eBay and hasn’t looked back. But, it was when she attended a luxury accessories design class in Ars Sutoria, Italy in 2013, that her life was changed forever. Sara had no background in art school and didn’t know how to sketch, so at first, she struggled. But her teacher, Mrs. Ellna, told her not to give up because the fashion world needed a natural talent like hers.
It was in Italy that Sara accomplished some major things. She designed her first evening bag, which took her 72 hours, and she refused to sleep until it was finished. Sara also named her company. Milanblocks is a name that has special meaning to Sara because Milan is where her bag design teacher was from and where she first learned to sketch and design and blocks because that is the main shape of her clutch bag.
Sara’s first handbag design that she put up for sale when she got back from Italy was a skull knuckle ring box clutch. This bag immediately put her on the map. The clutch was featured on many big sites and magazines, and when she saw that, she was shocked and encouraged to continue in the handbag design industry.
In 2015, Sara moved to Houston. Why did she choose Houston? The weather!
I am from China, and the weather is so humid there, and Houston weather was just like my hometown. So I moved here. I like tropical weather, so I picked Houston for the weather, lol!
When Sara moved to Houston her online boutique, which she had already moved off eBay to its own site took off. This year her designs have been featured in Elle Magazine and Style Watch Magazine. Sara even has a couple of celebrities who are loyal customers.
The secret sauce for Sara is that she is motivated and inspired when she creates something so unique and beautiful that everyone has to have it. But, she does have some rules for how she creates. She always keeps her finger on the pulse of what is trending in the fashion industry; she knows her customers and where they go and what they do and their personalities, and she’s always keeping her eyes open for inspiration.
MilanBlocks isn’t just an online destination for Sara’s designs; she also sells shoes and other designers that she handpicks with care. Milanblocks caters to all ages and anyone who wants to make a statement with their style.
Sara’s box clutches combine crystals, acrylics and patent leathers with animal prints, florals, and tropical prints, and each one is a work of art. Sara also offers custom clutches that are made-to-order, allowing each and every customer to express their unique and personal style.
Sara believes that if you want to do something, you just have to go for it and do it and that the key to success is to stick to it. If you have passion and keep walking forward, you will get to where you want to be.
In fact, Sara has proven we should all live by this final quote,
Keeping the passion for creation is the soul of life.
