Ten years ago, I went to a training class in the parking lot of a city park at night and almost every dog was wearing a choke chain. Training in the past was forceful. The focus was on obedience and the instruction was delivered in a very militant style. If asked to describe the experience, the word “fun” would definitely not enter my mind. The dogs responded, but no one had fun.
There have been so many wonderful changes in modern dog training
The focus now is on positive training and the relationship between the dog and owner. It is a misconception that if training is fun it isn’t effective. Now I tell the students in my classes that training should be fun.
When a training client first calls, I ask them to describe their training goals. Without a doubt, the majority of people want a dog that is well-mannered both at home and in public. People want a family pet that they can take places and enjoy.
Today there are enjoyable classes that also provide benefits such as exercise, coordination, and building a stronger bond between you and your dog. Basic obedience is the cornerstone, but it is just the beginning. Once you have mastered the basics, you can continue with a variety of classes that will help strengthen all those skills.
Having fun with your dog through training classes will help foster a relationship built on trust and respect. When you are having fun with your dog, he will quickly become your companion—a good goal for all dog owners.
These are some of the types of classes you might want to try with your dog.
• Tracking/Scent discrimination
• Tricks classes
• AKC Canine Good Citizen
• Dock Diving
• Canine Freestyle
• Treibball or herding sports
Enrichment classes for puppies is a great place to set the right foundation
Puppies do not automatically accept everything they are exposed to. Some novel items or new people might frighten a young pup. The Puppy Enrichment program is designed to expand your puppy’s socialization by introducing him to new objects, sounds, people, dogs, and experiences. As a result, it will build confidence and prepare your puppy for his journey to become a happy, well-adjusted dog.
Houston Dog Ranch offers a unique program custom tailored to each individual puppy. The trainer will develop a program to expose the puppy to some of the specific experiences that the puppy will encounter in his or her life with their new family. He will also build on some of the foundation behaviors learned in Puppy Class, such as sit, wait, and self-control.
As with any journey, planning and preparation are key. The worst time to check if you have a spare tire is when you have a flat tire. The same is true for raising a puppy.
