Here are 11 things about this Houston jewelry designer you need to know.
I am a native Houstonian and have a creative background. I began soldering at 17 when I was employed as a dental lab technician.
Every day I find the strength to drive myself, and when I am weak, I find the motivation comes from observing all the creatives around me.
One day I finally had the money to go on a shopping spree, and I had a hard time finding items I loved. Or if I did love them, they didn’t fit right or were out of my size. Or they were too expensive to justify the purchase. So I realized with fashion, it is all about being creative. Doing the best with what you have and pleasing yourself. Dress for you, not for others. Accessorize to express yourself and let people know who you are without saying a word.
Comfort is my number one priority. If I am in a bad mood because I am irritated about how something feels or looks, it is OVER. Overall, it is about self-expression for me. I like to present myself in a classy way without pretentiousness, most of the time.
In 5 years, I hope my business is profitable. In 10 years, I hope my business is still profitable. I do not have high ambitions. I just want to make a living doing what I was meant to do.
When I finally answered the question of what I wanted my career to be, which was a dentist, and began going to school for that, life got complicated QUICK. I started college at the age of 24 and started a family during that same time. My husband already had a demanding career, and I realized if my goal to become a dentist was accomplished, my children would not get the attention from us they deserved. I love working with my hands, and many of the same processes used for making dental appliances are the methods employed to make jewelry. So I began to make jewelry.
My specialty is meteorite jewelry. There are so many reasons why I chose this to be my focus. First, I must mention that being a science major I had to take Geology and dreaded it when I found out. However, I never knew that I would be so interested in rocks! Second, the competition in the fashion world is overwhelming. It suddenly hit me that being from Houston and making meteorite jewelry in “space city” was just the idea to get me inspired! Third, there is beauty in the mundane. I never wanted or was impressed with the fancy things in life. They seemed not to be unique. Anyone could buy them, and they all looked similar. Making meteorite jewelry beautiful is challenging and unusual. It was a match made in heaven, pun intended.
