A Leap of Style was a leap of faith for CEO and designer Karissa Lindsay. Her garments are fun, flirty and in your face and her designs are for the woman who loves a bold yet classic design. She focuses on African print dresses, accessories, skirts, pants that fit and flatter all shapes. Every step she has taken since she launched her business has been a leap of faith, so it only made sense that she call her line A Leap of Style!
A Leap of Style is all about taking a risk, whether it is in business or trying one the beautiful prints that Karissa uses, and the name doesn’t just represent the designer, it also represents the customer’s bold fashion leaps when she is wearing their designs.
A Leap of Faith
Karissa was born and raised in Ohio and attended the University of South Carolina, but as soon as she had the opportunity to make Texas her home, she took the leap, because she had fallen in love with the South.
Although Karissa always knew she wanted to be a fashion designer, as a child Karissa she was dissuaded from following her passion because “it doesn’t pay the bills.” So, when Karissa moved to Houston, she became a teacher. She taught high school English for a few years and then coached high school English teachers for three years.
A Leap of Style
Karissa found herself working jobs that didn’t leave her feeling fulfilled. She knew she was doing good work at good places, but something just wasn’t right in her heart. And, that is when she went through what she jokingly calls her ‘quarter life crisis’. She found her creativity, purpose and drive again and took a chance on designing and entrepreneurship.
I prayed and asked God to open a door that was just for me. And shortly after that, A Leap of Style started to gain some traction. I figured it was as good of time as any to take a chance and see if I could make this childhood dream a reality, and it has been an amazing ride since!
Karissa is inspired by the women she design for and she believes that fashion is a timestamp of beauty on each season in life. She knows that her purpose on this earth is to empower and inspire women and A Leap of Style allows her to do that through fashion.
I’m constantly considering what the woman who shops with me needs, and I design from that space. I’m also pretty inspired by architectural design and clean, structured lines.
Karissa is a self-taught designer whose pieces are tailored to perfection, and she has an eye for the smallest details. The use of prints comes from when she was young when her love of prints evolved. Although she has paved her own way with A Leap of Style, she currently has two interns working with her, Reshundra and Monique, and she will be opening up opportunities for more interns at the start of next year.
I appreciate that Houston is big enough to make a name for yourself, yet small enough that you don’t get swallowed up like a New York or LA. There’re some great opportunities for networking through FGI.
Karissa’s long term plans? In 5 years Karissa plans to be solely focused on design and coaching other entrepreneurs. She will have an established team that is capable of making all of the parts of her business leap!
