Your child has struggled in the traditional classroom and you know that they have learning differences. You have moved them from school to school and you have spent thousands of dollars having them tested, but can’t seem to find the right fit for them educationally. This is not a new scenario, and one that The Monarch School hears quite a bit when a new parent comes to visit their campus. After a visit to The Monarch School parents often feel they have finally found the right fit for their child and relief that their child can be in an educational haven that can offer them not only support, love, nurturing and an education, but also the ability to spread their wings and learn how to break out of their cocoon and become the beautiful butterfly they were meant to be, spread their wings and fly.
The Monarch School
The Monarch School is an amazing place. Started in 1997, Dr. Marty Webb saw a need that wasn’t being met, and she decided to meet it. What makes The Monarch School different from all other schools is that they serve all children with neurological differences. This can be anything from ADHD to traumatic brain disorders, and they do this with a trio of cognitive, emotional and social development components delivered in an innovative and therapeutic educational way.
The school has four developmental level systems and each of those systems has four core goals. The core goals are the heart of The Monarch School, and growth within these four goals provides the student with skills that can take them beyond the classroom walls and into the real world. These goals include:
- Self regulation and awareness
- Relationship development
- Executive functions
- Academic/Professional competence
The developmental levels are:
Each Child Is Different
When you apply to The Monarch School, a full psychological and social assessment is done on your child so that an individualized treatment and educational plan can be developed that will meet your child’s strengths. The classrooms generally have about 6 children in them, ranging in about a three year age span, and each classroom has psychologists, social workers, counselors and therapist that work not only the teachers, but also the students. The academic plan is developed based on the child, and many of the children that graduate from The Monarch School go on to 4 year college programs, vocational programs or employment externships.
Each student is mentored and guided in a safe environment and their individual learning styles are met and changed as needed throughout the year. The Monarch School is very hands on, and offers everything your child needs to grow, succeed and learn in a safe, happy and healthy environment.
From Chrysalis to a Butterfly to a Life
The Monarch School has three main programs. The Chrysalis Program, the Butterfly Program and the Life Academy. On their beautiful campus, each is their own building and serves different age groups and levels.
The Chrysalis Program is a 45 week program that also includes a 5 week summer program. This program includes the Novice and Apprentice level children. It addresses delays in the development of regulation, sensory mortor coordination, language, relationships and academics. The classrooms look like classrooms and the student works with intervention specialists and mental health professionals on a regular basis. Music therapy and fine arts are a regular part of the treatment plan and day.
The Butterfly Program is a 40 week program with an optional 5 week summer program and includes the Challenger and Voyager level children. This program offers a safe environment for students to practice the skills they need to develop in the areas of Self-Regulation and Self-Awareness, Executive Functions, Relationship Development and Academic Competence and Professional Competence. Along with traditional academics, such as science, technology, engineering, art and math, the students are offered fine arts, drama and a program where they can work in the outdoors in a green living space, where they plant, grow, harvest and learn to use interactive decision making to achieve net zero energy and water performance. Support is offered in coaching groups and therapy groups and through Integrated Learning Practice.
In the Life Academy, students are learning the life of business by actually creating and running small student businesses. They do this through cooking, making jewelry and by accounting practices. These are student operated and revenue generating entrepreneurial experiences that the students can take into real world skills to build business success. Some of these ventures are revenue generating, some are revenue saving and some are community service projects that make a contribution to the community, but all of the students learn real world skills that take them far in life.
Debrah Hall is the Monarch in The Monarch School and she is the warmest and loveliest woman you will ever come across. Before coming to The Monarch School, she taught special education in the public school system, and you can see that she has a love for what she does and for the kids that attend the school. She is passionate about providing these students and parents with the best education and possibilities that she can and she is doing just that.
She is most proud of the success rate of the students, which is that 30% of the graduates to to either community college or to a four year institution and out of that 30%, 40% go to full time employment from graduation. She is also proud of how the school is not only growing, but continues to grow. The school is not cheap at $47,000/year, but 98% of the school is funded by tuition and she knows that the school offers everything to the students, with no hidden costs, and out of the 155 students about 35% receive financial assistance, but Ms. Hall said that no one has ever balked at the tuition because what The Monarch School offers isn’t offered anywhere else and there are no hidden costs.
We asked Debrah what the best part of her day was at The Monarch School,
I get to come and see incredible professionals pour out their hearts and education to the students and see the students grow and contribute to society. It is a hugely humbling experience and there is nothing else I would rather do.
Debrah Hall, there is nothing else we would rather have you do, because The Monarch School is #JustVibing and truly a remarkable learning institution for all learners.
