Girls Empowerment Network is having their first annual We Are Girls Conference in Houston on November 14 and J-Vibe was lucky to be able to attend the rally that was held at Young Women’s College Preparatory Academy. We want to just give you a taste of what’s to come, and we know that you will leave the conference feeling as invigorated as we did from just leaving this rally!

Chanting, cheering, singing, dancing and empowerment. That’s the best way to describe this rally. Imagine a pep rally that was all about getting a room full of screaming girls excited about feeling good about themselves and telling their stories? This is what We Are Girls is going to be doing, and this is what they achieved at this rally.
Principal Thomas, who is in charge at Young Women’s College Preparatory Academy, runs it with an iron fist and a heart of gold. She cares for each student as if they are her own daughters. Principal Thomas has put her blood, sweat and tears into this Vanguard school and the success of students is remarkable. She took a run down building and has reworked it by using her magic touch into a place of not only education, but love and, yes, empowerment for girls of all shapes, sizes and economic backgrounds.
Fly Dance Company was also on hand to do their magic moves on the stage and the girls in the audience were practically fainting in the aisles over the break dancing going on. It was truly remarkable what these young men have accomplished, all thanks to one woman who has inspired them to stay off the streets and off of drugs and turned many of their lives around. For her, they have made it their mission to mentor, teach and pass along the wisdom they have learned to young kids so they can excel and be the best they can be, and they are thrilled to be a part of this conference.
Leslie Goode-Williams ran the event with the ease of an MC who has been doing this for years, because she has, and the girls responded to her and listened to her. We heard what it means to them to tell their story and more importantly, but the end of the rally, hands were raised and shouts were heard from the filled auditorium of girls who were not only going to be attending the conference, but were going to be bringing friends.
We encourage ALL of you….please share this video. Come see what Girls Empowerment Network is all about. The conference is being held at Young Women’s College Preparatory Academy on November 14 from 9 – 3 pm. We hope to see you all there!
