“Life is all about BALANCE.” We often hear that phrase, but what does it mean? There is a balance for what foods to eat; a balance of family vs. work; a balance for so many aspects of life. One of those points I ask you to think about is the balance among your family members and family activities. After all, it’s a new year and this year focus on family fitness, fun and living life to the fullest.
Some of you have done your best to take care of yourselves. You are eating more healthfully, exercising more and being more active. But what about your spouse and children? Are they following suit or are they sitting in front of the TV and computer? Are they grabbing fast food to go and not paying attention to that food and activity balance?
Or maybe you have found yourself too busy or stressed to take care of yourself properly. Are you running your kids to their sports activities and watching them be active, while you can’t seem to find the time to be active yourself? Is your family life so busy that you don’t find the time to shop for, prepare and eat healthy meals?
Let’s think about balance in your family life – a balance to strive for that includes everyone in the family. We have to plan, or it will not happen.
Making Family Fitness Happen
First, imagine having the time for family fitness; then take action! Get everyone together and find something you all might like to try – a hike in a new park, a bicycle trip, a Frisbee golf challenge, a game of neighborhood softball, flag football in the backyard, a swim in the pool.
Work together to find activities where you can all be active and have fun together. When you are out doing these activities be sure and pack healthy snacks such as fruit or nuts and stay hydrated plenty of water, you do not need sports drinks unless your activities are more than a couple of hours. Coconut water is a better choice in place of a sports drink.
Now let’s picture a life balance that includes time together to plan healthy meals. Again, take action! Have everyone sit together and go through those dusty cookbooks to find something to plan and make together. A trip together to the bookstore to pick out a new cookbook could be a fun activity. Then make a family trip to the grocery store to shop. Work together in the kitchen to make the meal and then sit together to eat. Talk together about what’s going on in your lives, and make plans for what you’ll fix for your next healthy family meal.
Make your focus for 2017 family fitness and life balance. Work with your family to strengthen the bonds – body, mind, and spirit. Put an emphasis on enjoying family fitness together, not as individuals.
Make this year a time for your family to think and grow healthy together!!
