It’s a beautiful thing when a community comes together. As unfortunate as the tragedy of the Houston Floods have been, the truth is, it has brought the entire city of Houston together as one huge community, which is tremendous. It has made neighbors out of strangers. People who wouldn’t normally have opened their doors to most, have welcomed them into flooded homes for help, hugs and shoulders to lean on. This has changed all of us, and the hope is that the change will stick and this city will continue to be a united front.
Neighbors Helping Neighbors
Since the flood has happened, people have felt the need and desire to take care of one another. They have put aside religion, race and culture and come together as one to help, clean, pack and serve the entire community. Neighbors have knocked on doors of people they didn’t know to find seniors who were still living in water and damaged homes, and upon finding that, put aside their own concerns and problems to find the solutions that were needed to get those seniors help.
J-Vibe Online Magazine has seen this first hand, when a recent cancer patient brought her neighbor who had been living on her wet sofa and in her mold filled apartment for two weeks without anyone aware of it to one of the charity drives. Action was taken immediately and this woman was registered with FEMA and put into the system. This woman, who is a hero, put her own needs aside, and drove her neighbor to where she needed to go to make sure she was going to be safe and taken care of. That is community and that is love. That is neighbors helping neighbors. And, we are seeing that everywhere.

Tikun Olam – Repairing The World
When thinking about Tikun Olam and repairing the world, it is not just our Houston Jewish Community that can be included in this. Everyone seems to feel that yearning and pull to try and help and make a difference. As we were told by one very wise person,
We are our Brother’s keeper and we are told to live a good life. In the end, we are connected to everybody and we have to play a part in life and take care of one another.
Frankly, J-Vibe Online Magazine couldn’t haven’t said it better ourselves! Here’s to our #vibingcommunity and #bridgingthegap.
