From Barbacoa Empanadas to Deep Fried Deviled Eggs, These Sixth Ward Restaurants Have What You Are Craving
Modern-day Sixth Ward is loaded with flavorful places to eat and hang out. We’ve shared some of the best ways to tour the district and where to access some of the great educational and cultural resources in the area. Now come with us as we take a tour of some of the Sixth Ward’s most outstanding restaurants.
Graffiti’s at Union
At Graffiti’s at Union the brick walls are lined with—you guessed it—graffiti, and many of the tables house old newspaper clippings and other keepsakes from Houston’s past. Menu items include banana pudding in a glass mason jar and pork chops on the bone, but the restaurant’s real specialty is their giant burgers which can come topped with interesting additions such as brisket, mac n cheese, and onion rings. Just so we’re clear, all three of those toppings come on one half-pound burger, so if that sounds like your kind of jam be sure to order the Imperial when you stop by.
Julep serves Southern delicacies with a fun and tasty twist where patrons can enjoy deep-fried deviled eggs, glazed pork belly, and oyster’s on the half-shell. Here you can start the evening off with some fried chicken bites or pimento cheese and prosciutto, a new spin on a typical charcuterie plate. They also make hand-crafted cocktails, perfect to pair with any of their delicious small plates. It’s the perfect place to bring a date or to hang out with a small group of friends, but the venue is a little on the smaller side, so we recommend coming at non-peak hours in order to guarantee a spot.
If you are looking for a laid back atmosphere, Henderson Heights is the place for you. Seating includes comfortable couches where you can kick back and relax, a spacious outdoor space, and as an added bonus, it’s dog-friendly. The name of their game is delicious pub grub and an ambiance that makes you feel right at home. Their daily menu includes tasty treats like the Buffalo Burger, spinach dip, and Macho Nachos, and if you wake up on the weekend feeling peckish, they have breakfast tacos available from 11-2pm every Saturday and Sunday morning.
Beaver’s Icehouse on Decatur has Smoky Queso on their appetizer menu, and they are more than happy to “knock it up” with brisket for you. Other options include their Barbacoa Empanadas, Fried Green Tomatoes, and Tots ‘N Shots—which are green chile and pimento cheese risotto tots with a bloody mary dipping sauce. For more filling plates, try their Gulfcoast Gyro, Brisket Tacos, or one of their extra-special mac and cheese combinations.
Visit Taqueria Barba Taco Truck at their OG location on 2119 Washington Ave. every day from 8 am to 3 pm. The menu is short and sweet, but the tacos will not leave you wanting. They have it covered for both breakfast tacos and lunch, so be sure to swing by to try the smoked pork or carne asada wrapped in one of their homemade tortillas. They also have plantains and quesadillas available on the menu.
Just across the street from Taqueria Barba you can check out Catalina Coffee. Their fresh roasted seasonal coffees come from Amaya Roasting Co., another local Houston company, and their syrups add a lot of great flavor to their coffees without over sweetening the drinks. The little cafe is stocked with pastries and the cinnamon rolls they have on hand are to-die-for. They also offer a variety of danishes, croissants, and muffins to choose from as well. The vibe at Catalina is very chill, with seating available both inside and out.
The Caddy Shack
The Caddy Shack Bar and Grill is a sports bar located on Washington near Sabine. They have indoor and outdoor seating, with plenty of TVs to catch the game, and hookah is available in the bar area as well. The Caddy Shack also houses The Turkey Leg Hut, so stop by to try a smoked turkey leg, some boudin, or their Hut Jerk Chicken Tacos. Additionally, Tuesday night is Shack Steak Nite where guests can opt to take part in the Steak Nite Buffet – yum!
